OOB theatre needs idea bank

The New York IT Awards is collecting needs and suggestions from the NYC theatre community to the City of New York, and asks for your contributions.

It is our hope to collect the community's needs as a whole, and put together a master list of items when making presentations to community boards, arts task forces, and city officials.

If you are inclined (even one suggestion), copy and paste the following information into the comments below. If you prefer anonymity, email your suggestions to community@nyitawards.com.

    SUGGESTIONS:

While forging strong relationships with government partners is essential, I'd like to see NYIT support an idea bank that also looks elsewhere for problem solving. The following are 5 suggestions that aren't just for our government partners.

1)Support for an arts-specific social network that brings audience and artists from all disciplines into one online space (this could be something like Misnomer's AEP).
2)Support Fractured Atlas' attempt to provide artists with affordable health care.
3)Fund a mentoring/support program that links Off-Broadway theatres and Broadway producers with like-minded Off-Off/Indie theatre leaders in a sustained, two-way street relationship.
4)Support eduction programs like Epic's that sustain the relationship beyond the classroom into young adult apprentice programs like their EpicNEXT - programs that empower young adults to create, especially in that pivotal time when theatre often loses them.
5)Provide shared theatre spaces that remove the presenter/festival administrative layer, and put 3-5 Off-Off companies in direct control of their own programming. Nothing against the wonderful presenting organizations that are out there, but some companies function better as direct producers of their work, are in desperate need of space, and aren't yet near the kinds of resources a capital campaign demands.
6.) And oh yeah, showcase code reform.

And yeah, we need to join the League of Independent Theater already! Is that #7?

I'm excited for this idea bank, and I hope you don't mind me straying a little: we have great need of a reservoir of brainstorms and best practices. And if this isn't it, maybe add it to my list as #8?
